We are in the thick of an a unit on writing informational reports. Informational reports present factual information accurately and in an organized way. They may include graphic features such as maps and photographs. During this unit, we are reading and analyzing many published informational reports.
Most students are finished with writing an Animal Report on an animal whose habitat is in North America. Now they get to write reports about topics of their choosing. They are writing their own research questions, then finding information online on our class IPADs. They also were encouraged to choose books from the library on their topic. They will draft, revise and edit, and then publish their report.
This is an exciting unit in which children get to explore nonfiction topics that interest them, and learn how writers research and organize reports. You may wish to spend some time talking with your child about things he or she finds interesting.
You can also ask your child questions to learn about his or her progress.

For example:
- Have you brainstormed any ideas yet? Would you like to share your ideas with me?
- What have you written so far?
- What part of writing do you enjoy most?
- What part of writing is difficult for you?
- Are there other topics you are interested in that you would like to write a report about?
